Project Joyride: Hacking Carl's Prius RFID

clock July 5, 2006 15:19 by author brian.kuhn

After listening to the .NET Rocks! show on digital identity, I got to thinking about Carl's new Toyota Prius. Leveraging my new found knowledge gained from listening to .NET Rocks! for evil, I hatched a plan and contacted Richard for help in breaking the Prius RFID key Carl is known to carry around with him.

Richard was able to come with in close proximity to Carl as he walked up to his Prius, and using a handheld RFID reader recorded the RFID being broadcast by Carl's key. A few hours of work and we had extracted the RFID used by Carl to open and start his Prius:

(In retrospect we should have guessed what it was.)

Having completed phase 1 of our plan, we engaged the services of Geoff and Karen to keep Carl occupied for a few hours (although we didn't think the fire would grow that big or spread to the adjacent buildings so quickly). With Carl occupied, Richard and I were able to move on to phase 2 of the plan:

Overall, it was a satisfying intellectual and criminal enterprise. After it was all over, Carl said that he may have to modify his original goal of "Training Developers To Work Smarter" to "Training Developers To Not Steal His @$#!% Car".
