Rory recently commented on and gave some sage advice on what makes a blog successful. His pertinent points were:
- You need to want to write
- You need to believe you have something to say
- You need to write in an interesting style
I find all of these true based on who and what I subscribe to. Blogs are not typically novels, and are closer to the sentence fragment family of writing for most posts. People will find your content typically based on what you have to say (point #2). They will likely subscribe and continue to read your content based on points #1 and #3. I like reading Rory, Scoble, etc. because they obviously have a desire, nay, a compulsion to write about topics they are interested in and they believe in what they are saying. Style of writing ranges from humorous, to inquisitive, to furious in nature.
I myself often feel I have something to say, but my lazy nature prevents me from posting regularly. For example, I had a lot to say about digital rights management and the Broadcast flag the FCC is pushing, and even began to compile research on the subject for a post. But I haven't written anything. The biggest reason is I have other things, like the upcoming birth of my daughter, that consume most of my cycles. I am hoping I will eventually achieve a life balance that encourages me to post more often on the subjects I am interested in.
Until then, I am happy that there are other more driven people that have interesting things to say and take the time to say them.
